Where were the protests when George W. Bush actually went to a school to read a book?

Oh. I forgot.

There weren’t any.

It’s easy to understand the opposition, and the comparison to Bush reading a book, frankly, is silly.
It’s hard to believe that by reading a children’s book Bush could hope to encourage a certain line of thought in children. Obama has written a speech specifically for the children he’s going to address, and while it’s ridiculous to think that he would somehow attempt to brainwash these kids into being liberal yuppies, it’s easy to understand where the fear (and protests) stem from.
It’s dumb, but so is the comparison.

It is true that a speech by a literate person does not compare to reading a children’s book.

The comparison applies, though, insofar as both the speech and the children’s book are both about as innocuous as they can be.

I suspect that, if Obama were white, there would be not nearly so much complaining.

But there certainly would be some, as the Booman points out here:

What’s really odd is that this country behaves completely differently when there is a Democratic president. The Right in this country is basically placated as long as the White House houses a Republican. But, put a Democrat in the Oval Office, and the Crazy comes out in spades.

    These people are nuts.
